Besides Fulmer and Soto, the Tigers aren't getting positive results from their bullpen. Asked to handle a significant role, Buck Farmer was designated for assignment in early May because of his While Avila is excited about the growth of the starting rotation — thanks to pitching coach Chris Fetter — as it pertains to the rebuild, he knows the Tigers must make improvements in other areas: Offense, defense and relief pitching.
Obviously, you need good defense, and then you need timely hitting. You got out in the free agent market, it's the most expensive thing that you're going to get. It's going to be also the riskiest from a health perspective and injuries.
I've said it from Day 1, we need to have a good nucleus of homegrown pitching talent, which we're developing as we speak. Pitching is important. I think Willi Castro is still a work in progress.
The guys are working with him very hard, but the potential is there. The two catchers in Eric Haase and Jake Rogers, we can see the difference behind the plate from a defensive perspective. In the infield, you've got guys like Harold Castro and Jeimer Candelario really coming through. Now, Niko Goodrum is a bit inconsistent, but we're continuing to work with him. He came in late, several weeks late to spring training , so he started a little behind everybody else.

Throughout our yearlong Bicentennial celebration at the University of Michigan, we have been examining what we offer to communities all around our state, and particularly here in Southeast Michigan.
One: As a research university, we make the state and communities we serve more prosperous, through innovations that drive economic growth and create jobs. And three: We make the quality of life better — not just for our graduates, but for everyone, and not just through research and education, but also through our galleries and artistic performances, the cutting-edge healthcare provided by Michigan Medicine, and our outstanding athletics teams.
I am a scientist at heart, so I could share huge amounts of data that support each of these points. First of all, public value and service are in our DNA. Two hundred years ago, the legislative act that created U-M envisioned a university that would serve the public good.
The greatest strength of a place like U-M is in the confluence of research, teaching, performance and patient care, which come to life in our galleries and libraries, our classrooms, labs, hospitals and clinics. A Michigan without one or more of these elements would no longer be Michigan. One way to illustrate this is by a show of hands. How many of you went to U-M, have an immediate family member who did, or have a colleague at your company who did?
I mention your work colleagues because we know Michigan grads get hired. In fact, Amazon hires more Michigan grads than those from any other school! But it may surprise you that graduates of our College of Literature, Science and the Arts, do just as well. Employers are looking for workers who have broad skill sets and can tackle complex problems, work in groups, communicate clearly, think critically and collaborate across cultural differences.
