I was simply an appreciative and encouraging audience. I love Richard's iPad art and never get tired of watching these amazing images unfold. I also love the fact that Richard completely defied everyone's expectations and dived right in to a medium that was unfamiliar and perhaps uncomfortable.

Richard' s digital works serve as a reminder that we are all much broader in potential than we might appear, and that, even if you think you know someone, they can and will surprise you.

As Professors, we all spend a lot of time trying to motivate our students to go beyond their comfort zone. Richard put his money where his mouth is, put his nose to the grindstone to mix metaphors and surprised us all.

These tablets represent a new platform and approach. They bring digital technology into the real world , using natural, intuitive gestures. Most people in the Foundation area have adapted the iPads in useful and creative ways. The most negative among us have even argued about whether you can make anything interesting at all on the iPad. While we were speculating and finding our bearings, Richard Fiorelli quietly went to work and became the most prolific iPad artist of any of us, producing literally hundreds of amazing images in a few short weeks.

These images would not have been exactly the same if they were created using any other medium. Many would not have been created at all without the iPad. Feb 2nd, Jan 4th, Oct 4th, Aug 26th, His was one of the most important classes I took at CIA. There was an extremely high level of sophistication in Mr. Fiorelli's thinking. His was the class brutal but if you are seriously interested in learning about design, he was brilliant.

If he was too hard or wasn't nice enough, chances are you weren't right for it and should take another. But Fiorelli has mellowed. He dates certain changes in perspective to , when he collapsed in the classroom and was rushed to Mt. Sinai Medical Center. During the emergency room exam, his heart stopped.

For a moment, he was dead. But you still have a sense of I-am-ness. He was diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome. Since the diagnoses, he has had three artificial pacemakers and another flat-lining experience. It changed his mindset. He became keenly interested in the people around him. He found it that to be true. He struck up a friendship with Viktor Schreckengost, the industrial designer who was still teaching at CIA in his golden years. Fiorelli introduced himself to people around the building.

And he drew and drew and drew. He still draws every day. Some people assume the prolific drawing is part of his unconventional wiring, though Fiorelli dismisses that. If you have a problem with me drawing at an art school, you need to re-evaluate.

Nominations are made by students, faculty and alumni. Incoming first-year students received iPads with instructions to use them in their artwork.
