A second Walmart Supercenter is scheduled to open in Chula Vista this fall, with Lakeside getting one next summer.
The stores, generally 30, square feet larger than traditional Walmarts, feature a full-service deli, a bakery, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables and aisles full of soup and cereal. During the bitter Southern California grocery strike and lockout of , the major chains frequently cited Walmart and its plans to enter the region as a reason why they needed to take a hard line on labor costs. Walmart may be here later than expected, but the mood among consumers yesterday was jovial at the expanded and remodeled College Boulevard location.
There was a parking lot party complete with dancers, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and free cake. A price war would be good news for retired shoppers like Weir, but not for grocery stores in the area. It also means that shoppers from other parts of the county might travel a few extra miles to save money. And though the store hired new employees for the expanded Supercenter, Kasparian said many of them are actually earning very little. But Walmart employee Vince Orderica said he is happy to have a job.
